5v automotive relay
Pin Number. Pin Name. Coil End 1. Coil End 2. Common COM. Common is connected to one End of the Load that is to be controlled.
Normally Close NC. The other end of the load is either connected to NO or NC. If connected to NC the load remains connected before trigger. Normally Open NO. If connected to NO the load remains disconnected before trigger. Relays are most commonly used switching device in electronics. Let us learn how to use one in our circuits based on the requirement of our project.
Before we proceed with the circuit to drive the relay we have to consider two important parameter of the relay. Our relay here has 5V trigger voltage, but you can also find relays of values 3V, 6V and even 12V so select one based on the available voltage in your project.
Make sure the load you are using falls into this range. The above circuit shows a bare-minimum concept for a relay to operate. This switch can be anything from a small transistor to a microcontroller or a microprocessor which can perform switching operating.
You can also notice a diode connected across the coil of the relay, this diode is called the Fly back Diode. The purpose of the diode is to protect the switch from high voltage spike that can produced by the relay coil. As shown one end of the load can be connected to the Common pin and the other end is either connected to NO or NC. If connected to NO the load remains disconnected before trigger and if connected to NC the load remains connected before trigger.

First you should know that a relay is just a device that when given a certain voltage will apply that voltage to other parts. Think of it like a train yard…. A relay does the same.
It takes the incoming voltage and once grounded will send that voltage to other places. So lets just focus on what an automotive relays is.
You will usually see 3, 4, and 5 prong relays. An automotive relay will be working with either a 12v or 5v signal. For this article, lets just assume we are talking about standard 12v relays.
Every relay should have a diagram showing what the relay does. Here are some examples: The squiggly line represents what we call: the coil. This is the part of the relay that switches or moves when it receives its desired voltage…. So lets use the diagram below click for larger image :. Pin 85 and 86 are the coil. So we will hook one up to 12v, and one to ground.
This way when the relay receives either voltage or is grounded the relay will jump into action. Well in this case it will take whatever voltage is on input 30 and switch it from outputting on pin 87A to pin Well maybe the above relay is for your headlights. When you turn your headlights on you send voltage to pin 30 which when the relay is not active sends it right out to pin 87a, which happens to be your low-beams.
Also lets set up the scenario by telling you that Pin 85 and 86, which are the coil, pin 86 is grounded but pin 85 currently has no voltage. Now you go to turn on your High-beam headlights. Once you do this, pin 85 receives 12volts and the coil energizes, flipping the relay from outputting pin 30 from 87A over to Well it turns out 87 is hooked to your High-Beam lights.
So what happens…. While this is just an intro to looking at automotive relays, I hope this give you enough understanding to test them and read more about not just automotive relays, but relays in general.

In the most simple terms an automotive relay is an electronically operated switch. The type most commonly used in the automotive industry is an electro-mechanically operated switch. The most common application of automotive relays is to switch a high current circuit using a low current circuit.
If the worklamps are wired to light when the headlights are activated they could exceed the capacity of the existing loom set-up. An automotive relay can solve this problem. A key advantage of using a relay is that it allows the activation of multiple circuits from a single switch. A single input within an electrical system can be used to activate and trigger multiple relays installed in an electrical circuit. A simple real life example of this multiple actions from a single switch is the central locking system in a car - a single button press results in all the door locks locking or unlocking.
Simple, time-saving and effective. Although in recent times car relays have been largely replaced by OEM electronic module designs they can also be used to perform logical operations.
Auto relays can be used to perform both simple and more complex logical tasks such as - momentary inputs and time controlled functions, for example - the time control operation of wiper blades and the interior light time delay. The likes of a car enthusiast may find it easier, cheaper and more appealing to install a relay to operate a simple logic function.
High current electrical circuit components are expensive. Low current components are much cheaper. The use of an auto relay means you can limit the installation of high current circuitry to those parts of the system to which it is essential. Then my installing relays at critical points the remainder of the circuit can be completed with more inexpensive low current components.
This helps drive costs down.

Everybody's happy! An electro-magnetic relay is constructed of a coil of wire that is wrapped around a soft iron core - known as a solenoid. There can be multiple sets of contacts depending on the design and function of the relay. A spring holds the armature in position and when the relay is de-energised an air gap in the magnetic circuit is created.
This condition delivers the the physical closing and opening of contacts.A relay is essentially a switch that is operated electrically rather than mechanically. Although there are various relay designs, the ones most commonly found in low voltage auto and marine applications are electro-mechanical relays that work by activating an electromagnet to pull a set of contacts to make or break a circuit.
These are used extensively throughout vehicle electrical systems. This is the most common reason and useful where an in-line switch or the existing circuit does not have the capacity to handle the current required. For example, if you wanted to fit some high power work lights that come on with the headlights but there is a risk that they would exceed the capacity of the existing loom. High current capacity wiring and switches cost more than lower current capacity versions, so by using relays the requirement for the more expensive components is minimised.
You can use a single input from one part of an electrical system e. Although these logical functions have now been superseded by electronic modules for OEM designs, it can still be useful, fun and often more cost effective to use relays to perform them for some after-market projects particularly where you have a bespoke application.
Note: In this article we are going to focus on ISO mini or 'standard' relays which have a 1" cube body and are the most commonly used in vehicle electrical systems. A copper coil around an iron core the electromagnet is held in a frame or 'yoke' from which an armature is hinged. One end of the armature is connected to a tension spring which pulls the other end of the armature up. This is the relay in its de-energised state or 'at rest' with no voltage applied.
The braided bonding strap provides a good electrical connection between the armature and yolk, rather than relying on contact between the armature pivot point alone.
The coil and contact or contacts are then connected to various terminals on the outside of the relay body. When the coil is supplied with voltage a magnetic field is generated around it which pulls the hinged armature down onto the contact.
This completes the 'high' current circuit between the terminals and the relay is said to be energised. When voltage is removed from the coil terminal the spring pulls the armature back into it's 'at rest' position and breaks the circuit between the terminals. So by applying or removing power to the coil the low current circuit we switch the high current circuit on or off.
Electrical Engineering Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for electronics and electrical engineering professionals, students, and enthusiasts. It only takes a minute to sign up. I have a project where I need to engergize a 40A relay in a car.
My uC based circuit is running at 5V via a and is mainly doing its own thing, but I need a digital out to energise the 12V relay, which in turn is driving an air conditioner clutch as it happens.
What would be my best and easiest approach, bearing in mind I'll be building a fair number, so cost is also a consideration? Logic level FETs are available and capable of switching dozens if not hundreds of Amps at the voltages you're looking for, and appropriately sized would need a modest if any heatsink.
If you were nervous enough you could always use a transistor to switch the FET. This will only end up costing a couple dollars at the most, and is probably the cheapest solution. There are a number of different NPN transistors and diodes you can use, if for some reason you can't find these ones. Most uC's can only source about 20mA at 3. You need the diode because current flowing through the coil of the relay creates a magnetic field which collapses suddenly when the current is switched off.
The sudden collapse of the magnetic field induces a brief high voltage across the coil which is very likely to damage the transistors. This is how it would be wired:. See Transistor Circuits for more information. And perhaps this Arduino to Relay thread may help although I haven't read it. My suggestion would be an opto-isolator protect the CPU! And don't forget the protection diode to protect the transistor.
You just need a BJT transistor with a proper design to have it working in saturation mode ie acting as a switch You don't need an opto isolator to protect the CPU, but a diode in reverse parallel to the coil in order to protect the bjt.
